Organic food is NOT expensive!

Organic food is just way too expensive!” I hear this line far too frequently from nearly everyone that I talk to. Don’t get me wrong, I understand finance and I have had to plan my money usage wisely to get ahead in life. Please do not think I’m insensitive to that, but if you are too busy running on Dunkin’ or lovin’ it at McPoison, I don’t feel bad for you.

Yet, the modern day supermarket is wicked beacon of false advertisement. People buy fruit and vegetables under the premise that they are making positive health choices. Sadly, this is often not the case. In order to allow for shipping, much of the selection has been picked far before it has ripened (which is when it has the most nutrients) to avoid spoiling. Aside from this, a virtual science experiment of pesticides is unleashed on them during the growth process. Add to this, the fact that the longer the food sits, the more it becomes nutrient deficient, and you have a big problem.

I have the absolute prime fortune of living in a busy suburb with an organic farm stand set inside a large plot on a neighborhood. The food prices are reasonable, and I can watch as this brilliant process unfolds. It’s a process that went on without pesticides until the 1940’s. Everything was organic before this time. The petro industry created the need for such items.  In any event, my food varies in size, flavor, and texture. I have no worries about it sitting around because it is picked fresh for me. I know not all of you have this option, but you know where to find organic food. Whole foods and Trader Joe’s can become your spots.

Now to the price. How many people who complain about organic prices indulge in other food items that cost an exorbitant amount of money. Do you think your frozen pizza has 10 bucks worth of ingredients in it? How about your twelve items that are a “great deal” because they came off of the Wendy’s dollar menu. I bet it’s really great quality food if it costs a dollar with the preparation. However, an extra dollar or two for healthy and clean organic foods is a problem. Wake up!
